The Get Together Reaches $2 Million Milestone

At last week’s 2011 Kick-Off Luncheon, Executive Director Cathy Lawdanski, announced that God has provided over $2 million in goods, services and business expertise to Houston area ministries through The Get Together since the group’s beginnings in July 2003. To God be the Glory!

The Get Together started in July 2003 when several men from The Gathering of Men met with Sylvia Bolling, Founder and Executive Director of Aldine YOUTH. In that meeting, these men listened to Sylvia describe the needs of her ministry and then brainstormed different ways to meet the needs. This small group, in one meeting, came up with contacts and a number of ideas including a football outing for low income families and people who could assist with replacing AY’s parking lot.

Today, an average of 60-70 business people attend Get Together luncheons each month. These monthly luncheons are alive with entrepreneurial energy as the needs of our city and the problem solving ability of the marketplace intersect. While $2 million is an impressive number that has resulted from these gatherings, what it represents is hundreds of people using the way that God has uniquely gifted them for business to solve problems and meet needs. Through this process, lives are impacted and changed.

For example, in 2010:

120 people received free eye exams and glasses through TSO.
129,000 meals were provided through Hunters’ Harvest.
Friends of The Get Together provided jobs for people recovering from addiction and poor life choices – giving them a second chance to support themselves and their families.
Church groups were mobilized to donate Birthday and Christmas gifts for low income families.
Crave Cupcakes donated 10,000 cupcakes for after school snacks.
Ministries received guidance from professionals in a number of fields, including construction, accounting, software development, commercial real estate and kitchen design, human resources and fundraising.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. We praise God for working through The Get Together and for all those who participate in this ministry by sharing your business expertise and networks to serve others.
